Cyber Monday Breaks One Day Record

Onlineshopping     Invented by the National Retail Federation in the US, the term "Cyber Monday" is the first business day following the US Thanksgiving Day weekend. This relatively new term entered the mainstream last year because of significantly high sales online on this particular day. An obvious play on words from Black Friday, which is the Friday during Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday was picked up by the media and coined the busiest purchasing day “online” of the year. But was it really?

Once word got out to the web communities concerning this revelation, it was quickly shot down and countered with proof that in 2005 the busiest day was in fact between December 5th and 15th and not Cyber Monday.  However in 2006, Cyber Monday is picking up steam and the fad is becoming much more popular, so much that this past Cyber Monday Internet shoppers shoveled out $608 million to online retailers. This one day total in sales is the first time in history that the $600 million dollar sold in one day has ever been past. Furthermore, it is expected that sales are going to rise 24% from last year total to raise sales from November to December to $24.3 billion. If history repeats itself, this will not be the biggest day this year, but records will be shattered. So why are sales rising to such dizzying heights?

Two words, FREE SHIPPING. By experience, the absolute worst thing is to finish your online shopping and discover that you have to shell out up to $30 (depending on the weight & size) to your total. To put things in perspective, free shipping is actually saving you money. No long waits or car drives. But consider that these retailers are also looking out for their best interest. May putting benchmarks on cart totals, you sometimes need to purchase up to $125 of goods from the store to get the free shipping! An interesting concept that could potentially increase sales or lose a potential customer is web analytics where not properly studied and assessed.

On a more personal note, here is my best tip for online shipping, send it to your work address. This will guarantee that you will get your package and there is no chance that a delivery person may leave it on your front step (this has literally happen to me). So this year beat the rush and shop from home.
